Windows 10 comes in different editions like Home, Professional, and Education. But there are also different versions of these editions like the N or KN versions that Microsoft created for sale in other countries, and those versions do not include Windows Media Feature Pack by default and the wireless display/Miracast will fail to connect without it. While the N and KN versions are usually not installed on computers or laptops purchased here in the US users can still buy those versions and install them and not notice any real differences.
To identify if you have an N or KN version please follow these steps.
Run the DirectX Diagnostic built into Windows.
- Click on Start
- With the Sart menu open start typing “DxDiag” without the quotes.
- Click on the “dxdiag” program.
- If prompted to check for digitally signed drivers say yes.
- You will see the “DirectX Diagnostic Tool” box open up.
- Look for the section that says “System Information” like the image below under the System tab.
If you have one of the N or KN versions you can download and install the Media Feature Pack from the link below.

Windows 10 N editions include the same functionality as Windows 10, except that these versions of Windows do not include Windows Media Player and related technologies. End-user customers can enable the media functionality to work properly by installing the Media Feature Pack for N versions of Windows 10 (KB4039813). This feature pack can be applied to computers running Windows 10 N editions.
Microsoft acknowledges this issue

Windows 10 N includes the same functionality as other Windows 10 editions, except for Windows Media Player and related technologies. The excluded technologies include, but are not limited to, the following features:
